FROM SCHOOL TO THE GREENVILLE CONCERT BAND: ARTS FOR A LIFETIME!

Our March concert this season will be the fifteenth consecutive in our Arts For A Lifetime series and will feature nationally-known woodwind soloist, Randy Salman, along with members of the Greenville High School Band.

Students from several schools in the Greenville area have already been touched by these projects, and they have consistently voiced high praise for their experience. School band students perform jointly with us, and we play as a combined band.

Funded by a grant from the Greenville Metropolitan Arts Council, the Greenville Concert Band’s Arts for a Lifetime project promotes lifetime participation in and appreciation of the arts. Many students who participate in arts activities during school fail to continue these activities after their school years. As a result, a significant number of adults have training and experience in the arts but no longer participate actively. This project is designed to promote lifetime participation by exposing young musicians to one community organization – the Greenville Concert Band – that gives them the opportunity to continue their musical experience throughout their lives, regardless of their career choices.

The success of this project will be measured not only by these performances, but by how many of the students who have participated in these events remain active in the arts throughout their lives. This lifetime participation is important not only because of the rich rewards it brings to each participant but also because of the impact it has on the arts community as a whole. To ensure the vitality of the arts in Greenville tomorrow, we must build support among young people today.

You can help strengthen arts education in Greenville County today, and plant seeds for our cultural lives in the future. Please encourage teachers and school administrators to support events that engage students and adults in joint community arts activities, such as these concert events. Help students see a clear pathway to a lifetime of creative expression through the arts.

If you have any suggestions for future joint projects in which the Greenville Concert Band or other arts in which youth organizations could participate, or if you have any comments about this project, we would appreciate hearing from you. Please drop suggestions in the box provided in the lobby. You may also contact Darryl Jachens (864-646-7223) if desired.
